A charming original Japanese shikishi (色紙) artwork depicting a stylized wild boar (亥 / inoshishi), signed 小林 (Kobayashi).
The boar is rendered in a wonderfully simplified, folk-inspired style, with a rounded brown body, pale blue face and feet, and small accents of red and olive. Fine white strokes across the body suggest coarse bristles, giving the animal a lively textured appearance while keeping the overall design playful and highly decorative.
The generous empty space around the figure places full attention on the compact boar motif, creating a quiet and almost modern composition. The restrained palette, simple shapes, and strong graphic character are reminiscent of Japanese regional folk-toy imagery and zodiac decorative art.
Boar is known for charging straight ahead, it can also symbolize the spirit of moving toward one’s goal without hesitation.
Zodiac shikishi such as this were often displayed seasonally, especially around the New Year, and also make meaningful decorative pieces for someone born in the Year of the Boar.
The work is signed 小林 (Kobayashi) with a red seal at the lower right.
A delightful piece for collectors of Japanese zodiac art, wild boar motifs, folk-inspired painting, original shikishi, or vintage Japanese animal artwork.
