K18045 - Naruko by Okazaki Shima 岡崎 島

A vintage Naruko kokeshi is the work of Okazaki Shima (岡崎 島), one of the few women artisans in the traditional kokeshi world. Measuring approximately 18cm, this vintage piece beautifully reflects the Naruko aesthetic with its elegant form and warm expression.

The doll features the classic Naruko silhouette a gently flared cylindrical body and a rounded head with a distinct black topknot (mage). The face is delicately painted with fine lines forming serene eyes and a soft smile, giving the kokeshi a gentle and approachable character.

The body is adorned with a vibrant two-flower motif painted in deep red and complemented by subtle green foliage. These stylized chrysanthemums, a recurring theme in Naruko kokeshi, are symbolic of seasonal beauty and resilience. The red double-line accents at the top and base enhance the composition and create a balanced visual rhythm.

Okazaki Shima, originally from Miyagi Prefecture, was active primarily in the mid-20th century and is known for producing dolls in the Naruko tradition. Though lesser-known than some of her male counterparts, her work is admired for its distinctive charm, refined brushwork, and faithful representation of traditional motifs.

This kokeshi is not only a beautiful decorative piece but also a rare work by a female kokeshi maker—an excellent find for collectors who appreciate craftsmanship with historical and cultural depth.
