VTT148 - Tsuko-Tegata from Chūbu-Sangaku 中部山岳

This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a beautifully crafted wooden travel plaque commemorating a journey through the Northern Japan Alps, within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park (中部山岳国立公園).

The front features bold calligraphy reading 入山之証 (Proof of Mountain Entry), traditionally given to hikers and travelers as a symbolic pass marking their visit to the mountains. Such plaques were often kept as souvenirs to commemorate alpine journeys and the experience of entering sacred natural landscapes.

On the reverse, a detailed illustration of mountain silhouettes is accompanied by descriptive text and a route-style map, adding both visual charm and historical value while reflecting the culture of mountain travel in Japan.

Finished with a braided cord and a small bell, this piece carries protective symbolism—the bell is believed to ward off danger during travel, especially in mountainous terrain.

A wonderful collectible for lovers of Japanese hiking culture and alpine landscapes, this tsuko-tegata serves as both a nostalgic souvenir and a meaningful token of safe journeys and adventure.
